iwlist wlan0 scan       all the local ap's

is hopeful. Select the right one and specify it with 
iwconfig wlan0 ap 00:00:00:00:00:FF

substituting in, of course.

If that doesn't produce a better result, you probably have a
driver that doesn't quite support the model of wifi chip you
have -- changing or updating the driver may be your best move.
