Unfortunately I don't have Ubuntu running any longer. My laptop has a
Broadcom chip, and with Ubuntu 9.10, my connections were solid. Since my
work net has a  hidden ESSID, I sometimes need to use 'sudo iwconfig
wlan0 essid algonet'. On fedora, under System/Network I can set
"Controlled by Network Manager" and "Activate device when computer
starts". I seem to remember that you could do something similar with
Ubuntu. IN any case, I'll try to bring up Ubuntu 9.10 (32-bit) under
VirtualBox this morning.
