In my experience, VirtualBox is excellent to use for both Windows hosts
as well as Linux hosts. I have not used Microsoft Virtual Machine
Desktop, but in my experience I would prefer using either VirtualBox
(that can run on Linux and Mac hosts as well as Windows), and supports
Linux VMs very nicely. My company use VMWare Workstation as its Windows
hosted VM.

In general, if you installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual boot with Windows, you
should see both Ubuntu and Windows in a menu during boot. I'm not 100%
sure what the timeout is, but it used to be 8 seconds. I think that any
keystroke should bring up the grub menu. However, you may have installed
it to use the entire disk. If you run the command from a terminal
window, 'sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda', you should see a listing like the one
below. The important thing is that there should be at least 1 NTFS
primary (sda1,2,3,4) partition. In this case, I installed Ubuntu on a
Windows 7 drive. Both boot fine. If you only see the Linux and Linux
swap partitions, then you may have wiped out your Windows XP partition.
