I know this isn't directly related to your questions, but I have a couple of
comments, which compelled me to get a Kindle instead of a nook:

If you have a glowing screen, you won't be able to read it outdoors or in
bright light.

I heard you say "8hrs versus a couple of days" ... But with the kindle, I
only charge it once in 1-2 months.  This is a huge factor, because, although
it's no big deal to charge your cell phone every night, the cell phone is
only ok because it's in your pocket as you go to bed.  You're going to take
it out anyway.  Chances are you e-reader will be in your backpack or
something, and it's a hassle to take it out.

I will qualify my 1-2 month comment above.  As long as you turn off the
wireless, then 1-2 months between charges is accurate and reasonable.  But
with the wireless turned on, then it's 1-2 days as mentioned.  I normally
just turn on the wireless while I'm using the wireless, and turn it off the
rest of the time.
