I ran a series of digs of various names against Google, 4.2.2.1
(Level 3 anycast), my house DNS server, and my work DNS server.

I repeated each test three times.

The first time through, Google was always fastest, by a
noticeable amount.

The second and third time through, every server had a
performance increase, but the best results were from the most
local servers -- Google turned out worst, in fact.

My conclusion:

It's not worthwhile to switch to using their DNS servers for
resolution if you run your own or have a competent local
provider. It's worth keeping Google's nameservers on a
travelling laptop, or if you are working around a shaky ISP.
