I think it would help everyone respond to your question if you put
more of your cards on the table. I based my previous reply on the
assumption that you had two computers with free USB ports that you
wanted to be able to generically 'communicate' and that you wanted to
do this as cheaply/compatibly/flexibly as possible.  Since pretty much
any kind of communication that
a (Linux-based) computer can do can be supported over Ethernet, I made
the USB Ethernet dongle suggestion.

You clearly have other requirements/desires.   The more details you
provide the better people will be able to help you.
