Depending on mood, I use both texmacs and lyx.  I think lyx is easier
to pick up.  If one does things at the command line, then you need to
run bibtex on an .aux file (I think), often have to run latex twice to
pick up these changes.  The biggest change in going to LaTeX is that a
document can have an error that doesn't allow it to print, arg!  Even
though I know some of the details of LaTeX, it is good defense to
generate and keep it in one program like lyx so you always get a pdf
at the end of the day.  The output is unmatched as far as math is
concerned.
