x11 server for windows

I've found that a combination of Mocha X11 and PuTTY works great.
Mocha X11 runs as an icon in the system tray, and provides a simple
rootless X11 display that blends in with the native MSWin gui, and
the X11 windows behave like native MSWin windows.

It's a fairly simple program; I don't think it supports fancy things like
XDMCP, or even a vanilla X11 root window. If you want something
like that, you'll need a full X11 implementation like hummingbird or
cygwin/x.
