Well, there's certainly a downside of NOT adding an SPF record.  ;-)  
(1)  It's more easy for spammers to forge your "from" address, which is
besides a security and virus/worm risk, also subjects you to more spam in
the form of bounce messages etc.
(2)  More and more providers are using the lack of an SPF record as an
indicator to increase the probability of marking messages as spam, that were
supposedly sent from you and received by them.

The only downside of creating the SPF record that I know is in the event you
make a mistake.  Disallowing yourself from sending mail from an IP where you
actually intend to send from legitimately.
