Secure boot protocol is not required for Windows 8.  It is only mandatory for new units that have the "Windows 8" logo sticker on the chassis.  Existing units that meet Windows 8's technical requirements will not require secure boot.  New units that don't ship with the sticker won't require secure boot.  Tom's Hardware DIY guide kit with Windows 8 OEM editions won't require secure boot.

This whole secure boot scare is just a heaping pile of FUD.  It is a death knell but not for Linux or *BSD or Solaris.  It's a death knell for the legacy PC BIOS.
