Hmm.  Come to think of it, for years we've had people come to
Installfests with sound problems with HP laptops, like when they plug in
headphones the sound still comes out of the speakers.  This is due to a
similar issue; instead of switching outputs mechanically like every
other device on the planet does, they drive it by software, which is OK
if you have that software.

I might have to head to a Best Buy with a Kubuntu LiveCD.  Or STFW for
specific models.
