I strongly recommend either google apps, or office365.  Personally I prefer o365, but they're both good depending on your personal preferences.  You can pay as little as $2/usr/mo, but typically people choose the $4 plan.  They both offer POP & IMAP if you want, but IMHO, those are the worst possible options.  If you either connect via Exchange or Activesync or using the Plugin, or the web interface, then you get a much more robust full featured, native experience.

If you're clever, you can actually use office365 for free.  Create a "mailuser" which is a mailbox with no mailbox.  Set it to forward to a gmail account.  Configure your gmail account to SendAs the o365 mailuser, using the o365 smtp server.  Then you're using a free gmail account to send/receive email via an arbitrary email address at an arbitrary domain.  But generally, it's worth while to just pay.
