I've always been irked by the overly complex interdependencies that have
been getting more and more introduced into the systems. Try to build a
stripped down system for a specific purpose and watch what happens when
you try to take out crap that isn't needed because it expands the
surface area for security holes and isn't needed.

As I remember the first time I ran into this was trying to install a
simple tool and finding that it required installing a few X11 parts
which dragged an entire desktop environment into the picture. None of
the ancillary stuff was required for the tool to do it's job, it was
just because the package was poorly built.

To me, this is the same as the systemd approach. (okay, squint a bit.)
