Could you catch the process in the act using lsof or similar?  What you
do when you know the process I don't know.  

Is Gdm mandatory?  There are other X display managers less spare looking
than xdm that probably wouldn't have that dependency. When I used debian
I was quite fond of wdm, I think it was. If you want more glitz, SLiM
seems to offer it without the heavy dependencies:

Seems to me I've seen people comment positively on it.
