i've been have a lot of luck lately with pihole.
gets rid of most ads. it has blacklists and whitelists. i have it running
dhcp for my local lan as well as dns.
$35 for a pi 3 b+ and it runs well.  i point my dd-wrt to it for dns and
shut off dd-wrt's dhcp server.
except for the time it didn't survive a power outage here, it's been rock
solid.
i now have ups systems all over my house. wherever there's a router or
infrastructure machines, there's a ups.
