Apologies for any confusion.

After powering on the system for the first time each day, I login and 
the MATE desktop appears. The three referenced system icons appear on 
the desktop, but only during the first MATE session daily.

If I then log out of MATE, or reboot the computer for any reason (kernel 
upgrade or otherwise), then log back into MATE a second time or 
additional times - the same day, those three icons are gone.

The next day, the system is powered on, login into MATE and those three 
icons are back.
