I had a similar problem on ubuntu.  I worked around it by using
musescore, which turns out to be better for my purposes anyway.  But
timidity seems to be working now.  I could probably figure out the date
of it not working and look at what has updated since then if you think
it would help.

I often think it would be nicer if linux sound would Just Work, instead
of being the way it is, but in this case timidity not working did lead
to a noticeable improvement in my workflow.

It can't be any new note. When you look at the keyboard, all the notes
are there already. But if you mean a note enough, it will sound
different. You got to pick the notes you really mean!
