Need to read out diagnostic codes from your car's computer via its
ODB-II port and don't want to pay $80+ for a dedicated tool with a small
monochrome text display? You can get cheap ($25 or less) ODB-II interfaces:

that communicate with Android smartphones via Bluetooth. (I saw these
discussed over on the Artisan Asylum discuss list.) Apparently for iOS
devices you'll need an ODB-II interface that talks over WiFi.

Presumably with the right app you get access to real-time data as you
drive, and can catch intermittent faults that are otherwise hard to find.
