[HH] Hacking Embedded Linux: More Hardware than You Require

When I get to the point of having a zed board, I will barter lessons on verilog rtl design and synthesis for an explanation on how to program linux.

Clearly the zed board is overkill for home automation. but if you are dealing with data or some kind of calculation where the software cant keep up, the ability to outsource any function to custom hardware (without designing a custom daughterboard with custom asic) is pretty cool.

Don't worry overly about it.  My point was that dealing with all the layers of an OS software stack adds complexity, and there ought to be a reason for complexity (accessing the network seems like a valid one :). And yes… once you reach that level of complexity, patching becomes somewhat necessary.

Looks interesting.  Turning the tables on you, how do we CS guys learn to play in the FPGA world without investing a month or two studying?
