>From my perspective, it is really cool to see a resurgence of hobbyists.
In the '70s we built things like strobe lights, radios, and simple digital
circuits. In the early 80s computers and operating systems were simple
enough to interface with I/O cards and program with BASIC and simple
languages.

When more complex operating systems became the norm, programing your
little devices became very very difficult and, more to the point,
impossible unless you had access to device driver development kits.

As computers progressed, buses became more complicated. It becomes almost
impossible for the hobbyist to do anything interesting.

We have emerged from all this with Arduino and Raspberry PI. These are
powerful computers. The Arduino is more powerful than the original IBM PC.
The Raspberry PI is equivalent of good solid pentium II or III. But the
cool thing as that these are small, cheap, and need no more tools that a
soldering iron and an imagination.

If I may proselytize, this is our new economy. This is the next new
exciting cycle of invention! In the next 10-15 years, the things that will
be invented will be amazing.
