One day the disk started showing error messages and it eventually died completely (sometime in 2008). I didn't want to spend a lot to get a new drive, but found an easier solution. I got a CompactFlash -> PATA HDD adapter from Newegg that was specifically designed for internal laptop drives. I don't remember the exact product name, but it was something like this:

Unfortunately, that is a CF to 2.5" PATA adapter. That is much more
common then the 1.8" PATA ZIF form factor. I think that a CF card is
physically smaller than the 1.8" PATA form factor, so it might be
possible, but I haven't seen one. If you are sure that it was for a
1.8" ZIF interface any clues would be appreciated.
