Meeting Topic: Linus Gets Ported To Boston! "Linux: Past Present and Future" On May 17th, at 7 P.M. in room 100 of MIT's building 26, Linus Torvalds, chief architect of the Linux operating system, will be giving a talk "Linux: Past Present and Future". The talk is free, and no reservations are necessary. Who: Boston Computer Society Linux/Unix User's Group Date: 17 May 1995, Wednesday Time: 7:00 pm. Place: MIT, Building 26, Room 100 (the big auditorium). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ How to get there: By Car: Ames Street runs between 414 Main Street and 130 Memorial Drive. Near M.I.T. Coop & Legal Seafood. By MBTA: Take the Red Line to Kendall Square. Walk past MIT Coop & Legal Seafood, turn left onto Ames St., walking towards the Charles River. Building 66 [25 Ames St.] will be on your right near the bend in the road (the building is triangular or wedge shaped when you're standing in front of it). >>>> Go in to Building 66, walk past where we have our usual meeting >>>> room, and follow the corridor (don't worry, there WILL be signs >>>> pointing the way!) The talk, jointly sponsored by The Boston Computer Society, Digital Equipment Corporation, MIT, and the Greater New Hampshire Linux User's Group leverages offthe presence of Mr. Torvalds in the United States due to a Digital Equipment Corporation User's Society (DECUS) convention in Washington D.C. in May. At the DECUS convention there will be a day of seminars on Linux, and a half-day tutorial on the internals of the kernel. Mr. Torvalds is expected to talk about why he started Linux, present plans to expand the functionality of the operating system, the various ports of Linux to different hardware architectures, and future directions of Linux. Then he will open up the talk to questions from the audience. Linux is a UNIX-like operating system built around POSIX standards. From its inception less than three years ago, it was developed over the Internet by a group of people who (for the most part) have never seen each other, and now runs on an (estimated) 1,000,000 computer systems. The operating system (and the source code for it) is free to anyone who wants it. This is probably the largest development project ever accomplished using the Internet.
