Linux & Slackware versions

Consider RedHat, which is much more maintainable because of its "rpm"
package manager and incidentally, gaining mindshare fast. www.redhat.com

Yes, Linux has become minimally commercial (in true web style, still
under gnu public license such that it is freely downloadable if you care
to wait). But only Romanians (sorry!) are poor enough to wait, the rest
of us pay $10 to various California entrepreneurs who pour whole
libraries of the stuff onto CD's.

For the record: here are the 2 vendors I know sell REDHAT for under $10...
Some even pay the company $50 to be nice (and get commercial X-windows driver)

[ Moderator's note: this fixes errors in the previous announcement --liw ]

ADRAS Computing is now taking orders for a new Linux Operating System CD-ROM
with Red Hat(tm) 3.0.3 and more. The CD has over 650 megabytes of Linux
software and documentation. It sells for $6 plus shipping and handling
($3 in the USA, $5 elsewhere). It will begin shipping Monday, April 8, 1996.

Linux is Linus Torvald's 32-bit Unix-like operating system that works on 386,
486, and Pentium PCs. Red Hat is a very popular distribution of Linux, with
easy installation and hundreds of applications, utilities, and development
tools. Also included on the CD-ROM are sound, CD, and math applications
from sunsite.unc.edu, the current (source) version of GNU Common Lisp (2.2),
and the Linux kernel sources with patches up to version 1.3.77.

See http://www.crl.com/~adras for more complete details about the CD; here's
a quick summary of what you get:

o Unix-like operating system with the usual Unix commands
o Internet services, e-mail, telnet, ftp, Web server and browsers, etc.
o easy installation with Red Hat text or X-based installation and RPM(tm)
o supports most PC hardware, including many weird CD-ROM drives
   o complete documentation on CD
o X Window System (XFree86 3.1.2) with graphics and applications software
   o modem communications programs
o TeX, LaTeX, and other *TeX programs
o tons of other applications programs, name it, it's probably there
o X games, text games, SVGA games, DOOM
   o  C/C++ compiler and debugger (gcc 2.7.2, libc 5.2.18, gdb 4.15)
o Other languages: Lisp (gcl), FORTRAN (f2c), m4, tcl
o coexists nicely with other operating systems like MS-DOS
   o complete source code
o sources and patches for Linux kernels up to 1.3.77
   o lots of documentation on-line

The CD sells for $6.00US. It comes with instructions on how to get started
installing Linux on your system. Please add $3.00 for shipping and handling,
$1.00 shipping and handling for each additional CD. Outside the US, please
add $5.00 shipping and handling, $1.50 shipping and handling for each
additional CD. Checks, money orders and CODs accepted (no CODs outside the US).
Add $4.00 for COD orders (yes, that's $4.00 COD charge plus $3.00 shipping and
handling). If paying by personal check, your order will ship after the check
clears. Texas residents add 7% sales tax. ADRAS Computing will donate 10% of
the sales price for each CD to the Free Software Foundation.
To order, contact:

ADRAS Computing (adras at crl.com)
PO Box 29391
San Antonio, TX 78229

You can order by sending a check or money order in the mail along with
your address, or you can order COD by sending me your address through
e-mail. Please specify "the CD with Red Hat 3.0.3" when ordering, so I'll
know which CD you want.

ADRAS Computing offers free technical support to customers through
e-mail for installing Red Hat. If you would like to see what is on
disk before you buy, you can find a gzip'ed 'ls -laR' of the CD in
ftp://ftp.crl.com/users/ad/adras/ls-laR.rh.gz, or follow the links from
the ADRAS web page.

Do we really need to save the trip half a block to the video store and
therefore spend billions of dollars for a new infrastructure?
