Hello, This is a reminder of our meeting on September 11th at Illuminata. I send out the original meeting notice on August 5th. I will also remind you that this meeting relies a lot on *you*, since it will be a demo of the applications *you* like and use every day. I plan on demoing the winner of the Red Hat Desktop contest (as stated before), but I also would like others to demonstrate their favorite programs. I asked that people contact me about what they wanted to demo. So far only two people contacted me, and that was to tell me that they would not be able to attend. So, unless we are going to have a VERY boring meeting (and y'all know how boring I can be...), you had better send me the program names you wish to demo, along with your needs in disk space, memory, etc. to do the demo. Thanks, md =======================Original meeting notice======================= Hi, I have been lax during these summer months in scheduling the next meeting. However, I have bitten the bullet and scheduled the next meeting for September 11th at 1900 hours at Illuminata (directions below). The topic will be: Desktop Applications I would like people to bring in their favorite applications to demonstrate. It can be an application that ships with Red Hat, or with Slackware, or some other Linux distribution, or just pulled off the net. It should not be royalty bearing (i.e. it should be freeware, or shareware). You should have done some amount of tailoring the application (if that is needed) such as making the colors pleasing to the eye, and be prepared to give a non-exhaustive "demo" of the package. It was this type of meeting that made me a "exmh" user last year. The other thing you should do is to tar your application up into a file that people can "untar" on their machine. This way we can copy floppy images, so other people can try and enjoy your application also. Hopefully your application installs into /usr/local, but if it does not, don't sweat it. What type of applications are we looking for? Almost anything other than the basic "UNIX" commands (such as grep, ls, etc.). Things like ical, plan, etc. are kosher. In other words, some of the larger, more task-oriented programs. For those of you who don't know where to start, take a look at page: http://nswt.tuwien.ac.at:8000/htdocs/blatura/textonly.shtml or (for the more scientific minded of you): http://lusk1.mines.edu/hjjou/linux_old.html (for Netscape pre-2.0 browsers) http://lusk1.mines.edu/hjjou/linux_prg.html (for newer browsers) or (for the astronomers of you): http://home.earthlink.net/~rfactory/lfa.html or http://bima.astro.umd.edu/nemo/linuxastro/ I will be demoing the winner of the Red Hat Desktop contest, of which I was a judge. Please see: http://www.redhat.com/redhat/dtc/winners.html for all the entries, but I will be demonstrating entry #30. Now, we had a meeting like this one before, but it was a long time ago, our group was smaller, and we only had a few people step forward. This time I will be happy to see many more people contribute. As you figure out what you wish to demo, please send me mail so we don't have duplications. If you will contact me ahead of time, and supply your software in tar format, I will install it on my machine and make it available for the meeting so you can demo it. We can discuss how you get it to me when you tell me what tool you are demonstrating. If I already have it installed, all I might need are your start-up files. I prefer Red Hat 3.0.3 (Intel) as a platform, with ELF binaries, for that is what I will bring to the meeting. The last time we had this, it was a lot of fun. And I hope that the output of this meeting can be turned into a separate presentation for the freshmen college students as they enter in the fall. Warmest regards, md ============================================================================= ===========================Directions to Illuminata=========================== http://www.illuminata.com/directions.html Illuminata's headquarters are located in Nashua, New Hampshire. We occupy the third floor of the Market Exchange Building at 187 Main Street. This building is better known as the home of Martha's Exchange, a popular restaurant and micro-brewery. (For some reason, our clients visit our offices far more often and far more enthusiastically since we co-located with Martha's. Hmmm...) Coming From The South (Massachusetts) Take US Route 3, which is accessible from both the Route 128 and the I-495 beltways, north into New Hamphshire. Take Exit 5 and go East until you hit Main Street. Take a left; go several blocks. Look for Martha's Exchange, a large restaurant in a red-brick building on your left. You can generally park on the street. Coming From The North (Concord, NH) Take I-93 South. When I-93 and the Everett Turnpike go separate ways, foTake I-93 South. When I-93 and the Everett Turnpike go separate ways, follow the Turnpike. You will soon come into Manchester. Follow the directions below for Manchester. Coming From The North (Manchester, NH) Whether you're coming from the Manchester Airport, from Route 101, or from Concord down I-93, the trick is to take I-293 to the the Everett Turnpike, then head South. Getting to I-293 is easy from Route 101, because they are largely colinear in Manchester. From the Airport, take a Right at the exit. Travel until you hit I-293, which you will take West, to the Left. Once you are approaching Nashua, look for Exit 7 / Route 101A, which you will take East. In a few minutes you will end up in downtown Nashua, where you will enter an interection at an angle (you're on Amherst Street, about to turn onto Main). At that intersection take a Right, which puts you on Main Street. Look for Martha's Exchange in a red-brick building on your right. Go to the third floor. - -- ============================================================================= Jon "maddog" Hall Internet: maddog at zk3.digital.com Senior Leader, UNIX Software Group Executive Director, Linux International Digital Equipment Corporation Linux International Mailstop ZK03-2/U15 80 Amherst St. 110 Spit Brook Rd.
