I met with Jerry Feldman yesterday, and we discussed some ideas for reorganizing our group (Boston Linux/Unix). One of the ideas Jerry proposed was to have multi-tiered membership types: * Basic membership: free, open to all We'd require that people actually become members, but at no cost for the basic membership. * Sponsoring membership: an annual fee Sponsoring members would be listed on our web pages. We could provide other perks for sponsoring members, such as email forwarding, and/or space for a personal web page. The main revenue source for the group would be classes. It might make sense to also have a "Corporate Sponsor" class. We defined a few basic roles for group officers. Note that these roles are defined in the context of user group meetings; we'd probably need to add to this when we look at the mechanics of running classes, doing our barbeques and Linux Cafes, etc. * Executive Director ``The Buck Stops Here'' This person is responsible for making sure that things get done. * Meeting coordinator This person is responsible for contacting and scheduling speakers, scheduling the meeting space, and running the actual meetings. * Publicity Director This person is responsible for writing and disseminating press releases to the various news media (Boston Globe, TV and radio stations, college newspapers, etc) and USENET and mailing lists. * Treasurer This person is responsible for handling the group finances, including a group bank account. * Equipment Manager This person is responsible formaking sure that all equipment is onsite for each meeting. * Volunteer Coordinator This person is responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers for various activities. * Webmaster This person is responsible for maintaining the group's web server. * Indstry Liason This person is responsible for developing and maintaining contacts with industry leaders. This is still a fairly rough draft. I'd appreciate feeback on this, in time for our volunteer meeting this Wednesday. -- John Abreau :: Unix Systems Administrator :: jabr at necx.com NECX :: 4 Technology Drive :: Peabody, MA 01960 Voice: (508) 538-8425
