Hi,
The next meeting of the GNHLUG group will be at the University of New Hampshire
on Wednesday, October 30th in room 301 of Morse Hall. The topic will be
"Java: The Big Picture", presented by Bill McKeeman, Senior Consulting
Engineer of Digital's Compilation Systems/Advanced Development Group.
While Java may be viewed by some as more "UNIX" than "Linux", or even more
"Internet" than any specific operating system, nevertheless there is the
potential for a lot of applications becoming available on the Linux platform
through the implementation of Java. There is also a Java Development Kit
(JDK) for Linux, and a project to distribute a Java environment for Linux.
Understanding Java's abilitities, limitations and potentials from a realistic
and technical standpoint is the topic that Mr. McKeeman will be addressing.
Mr. McKeeman is an entertaining speaker who can talk to any technical level.
I have heard this talk at Digital, and thought it an excellent talk for our
group. I am holding this meeting at UNH as our first meeting of the academic
year, and I hope the topic will attract students interested in Java and network
based computing.
Robert Anderson of UNH has tentatively volunteered to bring a Java development
system, assuming that he can get the "sporty overhead display system".
Also at this meeting will be a discussion of how UNH and the GNHLUG might
help each other in promoting the use of Linux. I encourage the UNH members
of the group to help publicize the meeting.
Agenda:
1900 - Greeting and Salutations - maddog
1905 - Java: The Big Picture - Bill McKeeman
2005+ - Discussion about Linux, GNHLUG, future meetings
2100 - break to meet at local watering hole
Directions to the meeting are below. I hope to see you there.
Warmest regards,
Jon "maddog" Hall
(Reluctant) Chair, GNHLUG

Directions to University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H.
UNH-Durham is easily accessed from US Route 4, in particular the stretch that
connects Portsmouth (I-95) to Lee (NH 125). From I-95, take Exit 4 if
northbound, Exit 5 if southbound, and follow the signs to the Spaulding
Turnpike going North. After crossing the General Sullivan Bridge to Dover
Point, US 4 splits off the Spaulding at Exit 6-W, just before the tolls.
Since the easiest access to Parsons is from the North Side, take the
NH 155-A exit off US 4, follow the signs to head to the campus, turn
right at the traffic light that you'll see when you encounter the
built-up area. After the turn, look for the fire station and Zais Hall on
the right, then you'll find a smallish parking lot just beyond. You can
park there in the evenings without a permit. Morse Hall is across the street,
and room 301 is on the third floor.
