Here are some facts. I use Highway1, but I have not had my Linux system up on it yet. Currently, the service provides a single ip address to the host computer. It is served via dhcp. There is no special software that is loaded into a system by the Highway1 installers. All your system needs is a DHCP client. The MAC address on your ethernet card is checked by the dhcp server, so the ip address request must be done on the system that contains the ehternet card with the correct MAC address. (BTW: The cable modem also has an IP address). Although I have not tried it, others have used one system to acquire the ip address, then have brought up linux with that ip address. The reason that my Alpha Linux system has languished a bit is that it did not have a monitor. I just bought one this weekend. -- +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ Jerry Feldman Digital Unix Development Environment Digital Equipment Corp.
