The cable modem has an AUI connector, and connects via ethernet to the system. It is not a dialup. Many highway1 users have internal thin-wire or 10baseT LANs at home. With IP masquerading, you can use the bandwidth to serve several machines. Highway1 bandwidth is 1.5Mbps downstream, 300Kbps upstream. The cable modems are throttled back to this speed, and each has its own IP address. Highway1 routinely pings the cable modems as well as uploads firmware remotely. Their preferred connection is to connect the cable modem with a 10baseT adapter directly to the PC or Mac. Some of us use 10base2 (thin wire). In either case, you can connect the cable modem to the LAN. There are several Windoze proxy solutions, such as Wingate. -- +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ Jerry Feldman Digital Unix Development Environment Digital Equipment Corp.
