PPP difficulties with RedHat 5.2

Well, since other folks have come along asking for ppp setup help, I
thought I would give it a go at home and see if I could set up a
connection, so I could advise them. He he... it's not so easy!

Jeez, in 4.0 I put in my phone number, username and password and it all
worked just fine!  Now, I really have to debug.  I have used ISDN for a
few years and have lost the touch.  I'm ethernet-spoiled.

So, here's the manual scenario:  (Yes, it works under win95.)

Step 1 I dial the number with minicom
Step 2 I see the following crap:

Use of this system is restricted to authorized users^M
only.  All activities on this system are subject to^M
monitoring and recording by system personnel.^M
Further use of this system by authorized users^M
demonstrates consent of the details in the Remote^M
Access Security Policy, available on I/T's internal^M
web site.^M

Login: (I type it in OK)
Password: (I type it in OK)

/* then I see this prompt*/

ascend% (I type in ppp^M)

The jibberish begins (indicating to me all is well and it's time to exit
minicom w/o resetting and type the pppd command line stuff I've forgotten
all the arguments to)

I have not tried the command line (because I've forgotten all the
arguments), but I think it will work.  Yet the two versions of the
automatic script redhat runs fail with the following dumps.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing/not doing that will help?  I've
never seen:

Unsupported protocol (0xc029) received or

Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0

What is the command line to start pppd with dynamic allocation?

/usr/sbin/pppd serial stuff /dev/modem defaultroute 0000 0000 something
dns related & ?  Suppose I really want to override my eth0 defaultroute -f
?

Ideas?
