I read the documentation. One section said to do a "# insmod parport_pc.o io='whatever ioport' irq='whatever irq'. When i did that it said that it wasn't supported by the kernel. So i recomplied the kernel, making sure that i had parallel printer suport. And the results were the same. I noticed that the irq 7, which is usually that 1st printer, was being used by the soundcard. I recompiled the kernel without any sound support what so ever. I looked in /proc/interrupts, and it said that soundblaster was at irq 7. I did logout and login, Why is irq 7 being taken up by the sound card if i compiled the kernel without any sound support? After that attempt i tried using Kmod. So i compiled the kernel with kmod support. It said to edit conf.modules, and add 'alais partport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io='whatever ioport' irq='whatever irq'. Logged out, logged in, and nothing happened. Was I supposed to exececute a comand after editing that file for the changes to take effect? I'm new at kernels and new at configuring printers, which is probably not a good combination in this situation. Are there any suggestions about this? Have people successfully configured a printer with kernel 2.2.x? I'm trying to use an HP deskjet if that means anything.
