I recently installed Red Hat 6.0 on a 486 machine. For Red Hat, you need at least 16 MB of RAM, and their default installations take up quite a bit more than 100 MB. (I'm not sure how much, but it's definitely less than 4 GB, which is the smallest hard drive on the market these days.) However, LOAF (Linux On A Floppy -- http://loaf.ecks.org/) can run in 4 MB (although 6 MB is recommended) on a 486, and LRP (the Linux Router Project -- http://www.linuxrouter.org/) can run a basic router in 12 MB. Both of these distributions fit on one 1.44MB floppy disk, so the size of your hard drive is irrelevant. -- perl -le"for(@w=(q[dm='r 0rJaa,u0cksthe';dc=967150;dz=~s/d/substrdm,\ (di+=dc%2?4:1)%=16,1ordi-2?'no':'Perl h'/e whiledc>>=1;printdz]))\ {s/d/chr(36)/eg;eval;}#In Windows type this all on 1 line w/o '\'s" == seth gordon == sgordon at kenan.com == standard disclaimer == == documentation group, kenan systems corp., cambridge, ma == - Subcription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" on the first line of the message body to discuss-request at blu.org (Subject line is ignored).
