I recently installed Red Hat 6.0 on a 486 machine.
For Red Hat, you need at least 16 MB of RAM, and their default installations
take up quite a bit more than 100 MB. (I'm not sure how much, but it's
definitely less than 4 GB, which is the smallest hard drive on the market
these days.)
However, LOAF (Linux On A Floppy -- http://loaf.ecks.org/) can run in 4 MB
(although 6 MB is recommended) on a 486, and LRP (the Linux Router Project
-- http://www.linuxrouter.org/) can run a basic router in 12 MB. Both of
these distributions fit on one 1.44MB floppy disk, so the size of your hard
drive is irrelevant.
