The command "ifconfig" with no arguments lists on interfaces which are in the "up" state. In most cases, this means interfaces for which you have configured an IP address. Try "ifconfig eth0" and see if you get sensible results, specifically a MAC address. Network devices never show up in /dev. They're not supposed to. You should be able to use "modprobe" rather than "insmod" to load modules and resolve dependencies automatically.
