I thought this was an interesting bit of info regarding PPP over Ethernet, used by telcos like Bell Atlantic: -Kevin > PPPoE is a solution for Outsourcing. Telcos are required to open their > networks to other ISPs. With dhcp, it's impossible. > > The PPPoE solution creates a PPP link over ethernet, up to the BAS > (Bandwidth Access Server), it uses the Radius protocol to communicate with > the ISP to authenticate the user and password. It then assigns an IP > address from the ISP, and creates a ATM tunnel between the BAS and the ISP > POP. > > So the user has the IP address of his ISP, and the telco can bill per > user, and give accounting to the ISP (total time connected, total > download/upload). - Subcription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" on the first line of the message body to discuss-request at blu.org (Subject line is ignored).
