First, header files on nearly all Unix (and derivative) systems are in the /usr/include tree. Header files for the most part are associated with the development libraries. For the most part, the header files should be supplied on the vendor's distribution along with the development libraries, which are normally located in /usr/lib. Development libraries as well as header files are normally optional subsets.
