Ominous new trend in virus protection

FYI;

    I went to download my monthly update file for the Virex anti-virus
product I use on my surfin' Mac and discovered: I have to register now
for "better service" and then they "personalize" my services. Now why
don't I trust them?

    This may be the final impetis I need to do all of my surfin' on my
Linux workstation. What's the best choice for virus (etc.) protection
for my SuSE based system?
