test is a built-in in bash. After a while, shell scripters develop an entire arsenal of ways to get things done that don't require extra processes, such as X=`ls` vs. X=*, or: cat foo | while read X do proc $X done vs while read X do proc $X done < foo and so on. In general I agree - if it's bigger than "trivial", use perl. I tend to err on the size of larger scripts because I was here before perl ;-). ccb -- Charles C.
