I used a Linux box dialing up with a modem as a router/firewall for about 6 months until I got DSL. It's a bunch of work to set up, but I found it worth it. You end up knowing a great deal about basic routing by the time you've got it working, which may interest you, or it may not. It's what I do, so fortuately, I like it. The Linux Documentation Project (http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/index.html) has a bunch of info. Try: http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/networking.html In particular: http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Home-Network-mini-HOWTO.html Which I haven't used, but in a two minute review, looks useful.
