The first book I went through was Learning Perl, http://www.bookpool.com/.x/zpmxyonv34/sm/1565922840. Which is not fantastic, but was easily digestible and got me to writing some simple scripts on my own. Perl's docs are also fairly comprehensive. Once you get all the basics down, I strongly recommend the Perl Cookbook. It covers a lot of the most common questions and important features in a _very_ useful format. There is also the perl beginners mailing list, perl-beginner at yahoogroups.com. Sorry, but I forget how to subscribe.
