Hmm. I'm going to avoid diagnosing your problem, and suggest that if you're going through the trouble, download the latest stable tarball to /usr/src, unpack, and config. Then, if you want to do things the "debian way", you might consider using the kernel-package package. Do your `make xconfig &` or whatever.
