As I have mentioned before, I backup both my home directory, my systems config files, and a couple of other directories as well as my wife's Windows system. I use a very simple script, which simply mounts my wife's Windows C partition, and performs either a tar or rsync. I have found that rsync is a bit better than tar in that it will not copy files that have not changed. In the past, I found that the Energy Star tends to cause tar to fail. The advantage of tar (or cpio for that matter) is that you can keep multiple backups. The advantage of a commercial backup package is that you can manage incremental and full backups.
