I have been useing encryted passwords for six months now, previously I used unencrypted. I believe my problem lies in a corrupted password database. The reason is that a week ago I moved the home directories from one partition to another. I got some help from a bluorg post to accomplish this. The password database for smbpasswd must record the partition that the home directories originate. NT must be recognized as a more secure installation than 98 given that I was having no problems logging on to the samba server from that box. My login problems are with the 98 box and in useing the smbclient utility on the linux box. I believe that 98 is considered a less trusted client. I also believe that anyone logging into a samba share from the linux box is also given a higher authentication screening. I have explored the pam documentation and see that there is a database created independent from /etc/passwd. I have moved the ../smbpasswd file and recreated it via the mksmbpasswd utility. When I call it as 'user' it still asks for the old password prior to asking for the new which leads me to the conclusion that there is a different database, one associated with pam or with shadow. Well I may be treading on unexplored territoy since this problem seems to arise from my previous moves and the most expedient course of action would be to uninstall samba and reinstall. If that doesn't work I can go back to '0', I'm getting good at that. jbk >Drew Taylor wrote: > At 10:20 PM 1/23/2002 -0500, you wrote: > >Is there a different means that users on the NT > >box are authenticated when they access their > >shares on the server, from the means of > >authentication that the smbclient utitility uses > >on the server? > > Yes, NT & I believe 98 uses encrypted passwords.
