Maybe the kernel on the floppy jumps to the wrong partition. I guess you don't have grub on a floppy? Reviewing, all of a sudden grub wouldn't let you boot. Something caused that, but I don't know what it is. If all you did was `fdisk /mbr`, your data is still there.
