Check your kernel .config file from your build. I haven't troubleshooted a kernel problem in a while, but my guess is you have incorrect options in there. Some suggestions are: 1) Review your kernel config 2) As a test, rebuild the kernel using NO MODULES. You could perhaps be loading something as a module, which should not be (like say IDE support). Alternatively, you could try building your kernel module by itself, and then insmod it into your working (Red Hat) kernel. I'm surprised you even needed to build anything for a new mouse on a RH7.3 box.
