That's pretty funny (if you aren't the victim). Lately we've had the news that Microsoft is going to have to redo all their taxes for the past decade, to correct for some "accounting opportunities" in some of the calculations of income. I wonder how many of their backup tapes will be readable? In case anyone missed this story, here's a link: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=134466879&zsection_id=268448455&slug=webmicrosoft03&date=20020603 It is interesting that amidst all the Enron and Worldcom stories, we haven't heard too much public mention of this. Maybe instead of shredding documents, they'll just find that unfortunately none of the accounting tapes can be read. | My personal experiences with tapes: | In a bank where 9 track tapes were stored on site in an environmentally | controlled library and offsite (accross the parking lot). I went to restore | from a backup, and failed 3 or 4 generations. | However, I did work for a company that had to go back 5 years and restate | their fixed asset depreciation. Apparently some of the tapes were bad. | At home, I restored from some tape backups, and the tape drive destroyed my | tapes (fortunately, I had a Jaz drive backup that worked.)., | On 9 Aug 2002 at 15:14, John Chambers wrote: | > | > Of course, that is an argument that is widely used against | > tape backup. | -- | Jerry Feldman <gaf at blu.org> | Associate Director | Boston Linux and Unix user group | http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 | PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9 | | _______________________________________________ | Discuss mailing list | Discuss at blu.org | http://www.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
