Sun still calls their file system UFS, but it does journaling, which they call "UFS Logging". This is a quote from the Sun site: UFS logging was introduced in the Solaris 7 OE as the process of storing transactions in a log before the transactions are applied to the UFS file system. Once a transaction is stored, the transaction can be applied to the file system later. Prevents file systems from becoming inconsistent, therefore eliminating the need to run fsck(1M). Since fsck can be bypassed, UFS logging reduces the time required to reboot a system if it crashes or after an unclean halt." Data management enhancements in the Solaris 9 OE include a strengthened UFS, improved journaling/ UFS logging and UFS snapshots (with the fssnap command). Since I'm talking about Solaris features, this would probably be a good time to announce that I recently passed the Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 8 certification. I prepared for the exams by self-study and hands-on experience with Solaris on my home network. Actually, this was my twenty-first IT certification exam since 1998. In this competitive job market I am trying to show employers not only that I have the skills they need, but also that I am highly motivated, disciplined, self-directed, and goal-oriented.
