And this is true. I generally think of Unix as the first modern operating system (although Multics actually was, and Unix is based on Multics). Many of the Unix innovations have been adopted by other systems, such as the hierarchial file systems, the use of a standard input and output and a few more. However, one of the more profound Unix implementations that I like is pipes. In general, this is the ability to easily tie the output of one command to the input of another.
