I had a similar problem installing linux from disk onto a machine with a bad CD-Rom. I pulled the hard drive out of the machine, installed it in a different machine that had a working CD-Rom (disconnecting that machine's drive), and did my linux install. I then swapped the drive back to the original machine and finished the install. It worked perfectly.
