Hello:

I used KDE for a while, and am just now playing with GNOME (icewm).
The only two things I care about are:

  1. Making windows active on mouse rollover.

  2. Adding icons to the panel.

I spent some time in Gnome->Settings->Control Center, but did not see
how to do either.
