dump on linux

Linus has said that dump on linux cannot be expected to work reliably
(see link below).  I haven't been using dump myself, but I know some
people who do, and when I told them about this, they were a little
alarmed.

I've been doing some googling, but I can't find any further
information.   Does anyone know if this issue was subsequently addressed
and fixed?
