Thanks to everyone for their suggestions on how to recover my machine. As fate would have it, the drive that crashed was an old IDE 40MB unit I was using to boot back when I only had a 2910 SCSI card, and since I now have a 2940, I can boot directly from my SCSI drive. Problem solved, for now, but I still welcome suggestions on how to plan and execute the migration to the "new" machine.
